"Biceps are like ornaments on a Christmas tree"

Ed Coan once said “Biceps are like ornaments on a Christmas tree.” Ed Coan is the G.O.A.T. of powerlifting and has a P.H.D. in time under the bar. What he means by biceps are like ornaments on a Christmas tree is that muscles like biceps are secondary when it comes building a strong dense physique. Too many individuals are concerned with their arms and glamour muscles not knowing that working on the big difficult compound movements like squats, bench, deadlifts, pull ups, dips, overhead press, etc. is what really builds quality dense muscle tissue. That does’t go to say that isolation exercise for biceps don’t have their place in training but they should come second thought to your compound lifts. So if you were to implement biceps in your routine it would be after getting the bread and butter movements done. Compound movements like squats, deadlifts, etc. use almost every muscle in the body to complete. The more muscles activated means more overall muscle tissue damage which equates to more overall muscle tissue growth. You have to build the foundation before you start to put up the house.

“once you can squat with 180 kilograms, your arms and shoulders will come along much more RECEPTIVELY. If you want big arms and SHOULDERS, your first prioirity is to be sure that your leg/hip/back structure is growing and becoming powerful.”
